A sophisticated phone-based social engineering operation allegedly stole $243M in cryptocurrency from a Washington, D.C. victim by spoofing Google and Gemini support, resetting MFA, using AnyDesk screen-sharing to capture private keys, and moving funds through exchanges; two men were indicted and multiple co-conspirators (linked via Discord and aliases such as “Wiz/Swag”) are implicated, with subsequent real-world violence—an attempted kidnapping/carjacking of a suspect’s parents—tied to the belief that the suspect controlled large crypto proceeds. The perpetrators are associated with the online criminal community “The Com,” and investigators observed rapid laundering and conspicuous spending on luxury goods and travel.
