Fla. Man Charged in SIM-Swapping Spree is Key Suspect in Hacker Groups Oktapus, Scattered Spider

KrebsOnSecurity reports the Jan 2024 arrest of Noah Michael Urban (aka Sosa/King Bob), a key member of a social‑engineering and SIM‑swapping criminal group (0ktapus / Scattered Spider) accused of stealing at least $800K and participating in widespread intrusions beginning in summer 2022 that exposed or enabled access to customer accounts across 130+ organizations (including Twilio, LastPass, Mailchimp and Plex); the group used phishing pages that captured MFA tokens, Telegram bots to relay credentials in real time, and SIM‑swaps to take control of victims’ phone numbers, and the reporting notes related illicit markets for stolen unreleased music and instances of violent retaliatory attacks among SIM‑swapping actors.
