In July 2024 the Town of Apex, North Carolina suffered an attempted ransomware/data-exfiltration incident affecting about 22,000 residents; stolen data was uploaded to Bublup, Inc. and the town later regained full access via a Wake County Superior Court restraining order in October 2024. The incident may have exposed extensive personal information (including names, SSNs, government ID numbers, financial and health data), though the report notes the data did not appear on dark-web leak sites and it remains unclear whether attackers retained or further distributed copies.
