German authorities have identified 31-year-old Daniil Maksimovich Shchukin (alias “UNKN”) as the operator behind early Russian ransomware gangs GandCrab and REvil. The BKA advisory alleges Shchukin and an associate extorted nearly €2 million across about two dozen attacks between 2019–2021, contributing to over €35 million in economic damage and at least 130 acts of computer sabotage and extortion.
