ID: Kootenai County notifies residents of data breach

Kootenai County discovered a ransomware intrusion on March 30, 2026, and is notifying residents whose personal information may have been exposed; the county engaged third-party cybersecurity and forensics firms and alerted federal law enforcement. The notification lists compromised data including names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers/ITINs, driver’s license/state ID numbers, medical and health insurance information, financial/payment card data, and for a small number of people biometric identifiers (fingerprints). No ransomware gang has claimed credit and the county’s notice does not mention an extortion demand or ransom payment.
