The article examines the tension in Kaliningrad between official Kremlin narratives that portray the region as a resilient western fortress and residents' lived experience of economic strain, logistical dependency, increased militarisation, and anxiety sparked by reported sabotage and opaque drone warnings; it argues that everyday shortages, rising prices, and local mobilisation (such as the BARS-39 reserve) undermine the propaganda image and normalise a defensive, suspicious social environment.
