End-to-End Encryption and “Going Dark”

This article updates the "Going Dark" debate on end-to-end encryption (E2EE), identifying five technically distinct E2EE scenarios that have different implications for lawful access; it argues that E2EE permeates the modern technology stack and that broad legal limits on encryption would harm cybersecurity, commerce, and government operations, concluding that new claims for restricting effective encryption deserve skepticism.
