Providing Security Updates to Automobile Software

As vehicles remain in service for more than a decade, the article argues that automakers face a significant, unresolved challenge in providing secure, long-term software updates across many models and versions—far exceeding smartphone lifecycle norms—while avoiding the safety and environmental risks of ending support early, revealing that current agile patching approaches don’t scale for durable goods.
