Is AI Good for Democracy?

This essay argues that the most consequential AI “arms races” are unfolding within democratic systems, where citizens, institutions, and politicians increasingly use AI to scale communication and influence—fueling bot-driven discourse, overwhelming review processes, and concentrating power and wealth in a few U.S. tech giants. Citing examples from public comment systems, academia, courts, and political campaigns, it highlights both harms (fraudulent submissions, degraded signal) and opportunities (personalization, efficiency), and urges democracies to both leverage AI for public benefit and counterbalance corporate dominance through antitrust actions, human rights safeguards, and public alternatives.
