Speeding Toward Taiwan: China’s Amphibious Armored Vehicles Development

China is prioritizing high-water-speed amphibious armored vehicles—exemplified by the Type-05 family—to support rapid beachhead operations in potential Taiwan invasion scenarios, with open-source reporting and patents showing progress toward higher water speeds (~50 km/h) and improvements in transition, maintenance, corrosion resistance, mobility, and safety. Despite advances, operational effectiveness may be constrained by limited PLAN sealift capacity, adverse weather and sea state conditions in the Taiwan Strait, and Taiwan’s geography; continued incremental upgrades and new variants are expected, warranting close monitoring by regional defense planners.
