Coupang Hit with Record $409 Million Data Breach Fine in South Korea

South Korea's data protection regulator, the PIPC, imposed a record 624.6 billion won (~$409M) fine on e-commerce giant Coupang after a breach exposed personal information for more than 37 million customers — including names, contact details, delivery addresses, purchase history, account credentials and some payment data — citing inadequate technical and organizational safeguards under PIPA and warning of heightened regulatory scrutiny and downstream risks such as phishing, credential reuse, and identity fraud.
