Tackling AI threats. Advanced DFIR methods and tools for deepfake detection

This article explores how AI-generated fakes (deepfakes, synthetic documents, audio forgeries, fabricated logs, and AI images) challenge DFIR, and outlines practical detection methods—digital fingerprinting/watermarking, AI-assisted and behavioral analyses, hardware and image forensics, metadata/hex review, ELA/NLA, and C2PA provenance—plus tools to operationalize them. It catalogs malicious AI TTPs (automated phishing, deepfake scams, AI-enabled malware, social engineering, data manipulation), presents a 2024 case study where a deepfake CFO induced $25M in fraudulent transfers, and provides guidance for organizations and DFIR teams on verification protocols, training, collaboration, provenance standards, and incident response enhancements.
