Open-source maintainers still work underfunded as sponsorship crosses $100 million

GitHub Sponsors has distributed over $100 million to more than 70,000 maintainers and organizations, enabling developers like Sebastián Ramírez and Caleb Porzio to work on open-source projects full time; organizational sponsorships now account for a growing share of funding and often provide larger payments than individuals. Despite this growth and features like bulk sponsorships and invoice payments, a large funding shortfall remains, leaving many critical projects underfunded and at risk of maintainer burnout and supply-chain fragility.
