Microsoft announced External MFA support in Microsoft Entra ID, built on OpenID Connect, to allow organizations to integrate third‑party MFA providers while keeping policy evaluation and enforcement centralized in Entra ID. The external method becomes part of the tenant's authentication methods policy, can be assigned to specific groups, requires administrative consent to access user information during authentication, and integrates with Conditional Access; Microsoft will retire Custom Controls on September 30, 2026 and publish migration guidance.
