US charges 17 Iranian hackers over 31-terabyte academic data theft

U.S. prosecutors charged 17 alleged members of Mabna Institute, an Iranian hacking-for-hire group accused of a 2013–2017 spearphishing campaign that exfiltrated more than 31 TB of academic data from hundreds of universities, companies, and government agencies on behalf of Iran’s IRGC and other clients; stolen material was resold and used in intrusions (including an HBO extortion), and five defendants have up to $10 million each offered by the State Department for information on their whereabouts.
