Over a Billion Records Leaked in Shanghai National Police Database Hack

Alleged hackers 'ChinaDan' and 'CNWang' posted samples of stolen data from Shanghai and Henan National Police databases to BreachForums, claiming a combined haul of roughly 23 TB and up to ~1.09 billion records containing names, addresses, national ID numbers, phone numbers, and (for Shanghai) police case records. WatchGuard Security verified provided samples as appearing legitimate and the posts offered the full datasets for sale; the exposure is reported to have resulted from an ElasticSearch deployment error on Alibaba Cloud, though the full dataset authenticity is not yet confirmed.
