On June 27, 2024, Cloudflare’s 1.1.1.1 DNS resolver experienced intermittent global reachability issues due to a simultaneous BGP hijack (AS267613 Eletronet originating 1.1.1.1/32, including acceptance as an RTBH route by a Tier‑1) and a route leak (AS262504 Nova leaking 1.1.1.0/24, widely propagated by AS1031), resulting in blackholing and high‑latency routing. Cloudflare mitigated impact by disabling select peerings and engaging the involved networks, and is advocating broader adoption of RPKI/ROV, ASPA-based AS path validation, and MANRS-aligned BGP best practices to prevent similar events.
