Cloudflare announces General Availability of Cloudflare Queues and explains a new v2 architecture that moves from a single Durable Object per queue to a geo-distributed, horizontally scalable design with multiple Storage and Consumer Shards coordinated by a central Durable Object “Coordinator.” By leveraging Workers KV for shard maps and autoscaling shards based on load and backlog, the platform achieves major performance improvements: P50 message send latency ~200ms→~60ms, throughput per queue 400→5000 msgs/s, and consumer concurrency 20→250, with plans for additional features and further performance gains.
