CloudSEK researchers found active sale and conversion of compromised and newly created Twitter (X) Gold-verified accounts on dark web forums and marketplaces; attackers use brute-force and malware to compromise accounts and then run phishing, disinformation, crypto and job scams, and redirect users to malicious domains. The report details pricing, scale estimates (e.g., ~15 inactive accounts/week, ~720/year), examples of affiliate and follower manipulation, and recommends closing dormant accounts, stronger password practices, endpoint security, and employee training.
