Car Tyre Sensors Can Be Used to Track Drivers Without Their Knowledge

Research from IMDEA Networks and partners found that TPMS sensors in millions of cars broadcast unencrypted, persistent unique identifiers and pressure data that enable passive vehicle and driver tracking; the team collected over six million messages from 20,000+ vehicles using inexpensive receivers, demonstrated high-accuracy fingerprinting using the Jaccard index, and called for rotating IDs and regulatory changes to prevent this privacy risk.
