Hackers Demand Ransom in Rhode Island Health System Data Breach

Rhode Island’s RIBridges benefits system was breached by an international criminal group that installed malware, exfiltrated sensitive personal information of program participants (including names, addresses, DOBs, SSNs and banking data), and is demanding ransom while threatening to publish the stolen data; the state took the system offline, engaged Deloitte to investigate, set up a hotline and is notifying affected individuals while advising protective steps such as credit freezes and multi-factor authentication.
