Thermo Fisher Patches Forensic DNA File Tampering Flaw in Its Software

Thermo Fisher Scientific released security updates for several Applied Biosystems human-identification products to address CVE-2026-17583 (CVSS 8.2), a vulnerability that could permit undetected alterations to .fsa and .hid forensic DNA data files if laboratory controls are bypassed; updates add digital signatures for files generated after patching, while three end-of-life products will not receive fixes and administrators are advised to apply mitigations such as secure chain-of-custody, encryption, access restrictions, and network controls.
