PowerSchool Paid Ransom, Now Hackers Target Teachers for More

PowerSchool suffered a major December 2024 breach of its Student Information System via the PowerSource portal, compromising PII for over 60 million students and 9.5 million teachers; the company paid a ransom but attackers continued extortion, contacting schools and teachers directly and threatening further leaks. The exposed data reportedly includes names, contact details, birth dates, Social Security numbers, and some medical information, and reporting links the activity to criminal actors (potentially ShinyHunters); affected parties are being offered identity protection services while investigations and law enforcement engagement continue.
