OVHcloud blames record-breaking DDoS attack on MikroTik botnet

OVHcloud reports it mitigated a record packet‑rate DDoS reaching ~840 million packets per second and observed multi‑Tbps attacks, many leveraging compromised MikroTik Cloud Core Routers (CCR1036/CCR1072) exposed with outdated RouterOS. The firm attributes attacks to abuse of device capabilities (e.g., Bandwidth Test), identified ~100k Internet‑reachable MikroTik devices that are potentially exploitable, and warns that hijacking a small percentage could yield botnets capable of generating billions of packets per second, greatly increasing DDoS potency and mitigation challenges.
