DMM Bitcoin warns that hackers stole $300 million in Bitcoin

Japanese crypto exchange DMM Bitcoin reported an unauthorized theft of 4,502.9 BTC (approximately $308 million) from one of its wallets on May 31, 2024. The exchange has restricted new account registration, withdrawals, spot purchases, and new leveraged positions while it investigates; it also said BTC deposits will be fully guaranteed by affiliated companies. Cryptocurrency intelligence firm Elliptic reports the stolen coins were split into multiple wallets, likely to obfuscate tracing, and if confirmed the theft would rank as the eighth-largest crypto heist of all time.
