In July 2024 the Rhysida ransomware gang attacked the City of Columbus, claiming to have stolen 6.5 TB of city data (including employee credentials, camera feeds, server dumps and PII) and subsequently publishing about 3.1 TB (45%) on a dark‑web leak portal; roughly 500,000 residents were notified that their personal and financial information (including Social Security numbers and driver’s licenses) may have been exposed, the city offered 24 months of credit monitoring, and the incident prompted legal action over the dissemination of leaked files.
