FBI links Signal phishing attacks to Russian intelligence services

The FBI warns of ongoing, state-linked phishing campaigns—attributed to Russian intelligence—that hijack Signal and WhatsApp accounts by social-engineering victims into sharing verification codes or scanning malicious QR codes. Thousands of accounts have reportedly been compromised worldwide; attackers can read private messages, impersonate users, join groups, and use compromised accounts to target additional high-value individuals such as current and former government officials, military personnel, political figures, and journalists.
