A Chinese national, Xu Zewei, was extradited from Italy to the U.S. to face charges alleging he worked as a contracted hacker for China's MSS and participated in a Silk Typhoon (Hafnium) campaign from Feb 2020–Jun 2021 that exploited Microsoft Exchange zero-days, deployed web shells, moved laterally, and exfiltrated data—including targeting COVID‑19 research—allegedly under direction of MSS officers using a front company (Shanghai Powerock Network Co.).
