FCC bans new routers made outside the USA over security risks

The FCC has updated its Covered List to include all consumer routers manufactured outside the United States, effectively banning the sale of new foreign-made models unless vendors obtain conditional approval by disclosing ownership, supply-chain, and manufacturing details and committing to onshoring critical components. The decision, prompted by a National Security Determination citing supply-chain risks and links to attacks attributed to Volt, Flax, and Salt Typhoon, includes limited exemptions for certain DoW/DHS drone systems and allows existing devices and UAS firmware updates through specified dates; consumers may see reduced model availability and higher costs as a result.
