Microsoft to automatically roll back faulty Windows drivers

Microsoft announced Cloud-Initiated Driver Recovery, a Windows Update capability that allows Microsoft to remotely roll back drivers identified as low-quality to a previously known-good or next-best version without partner or end-user actions; the feature is tested May–August and will begin rollbacks for drivers rejected during Flighting or Gradual Rollout starting September 2026. The announcement also references a Driver Quality Initiative unveiled at WinHEC 2026 and prior plans (June 2025) to periodically remove legacy drivers from the Windows Update catalog to mitigate compatibility and security risks.
