Microsoft confirms patching issues in restricted Windows networks

Microsoft warns that after installing the January 2026 optional non-security preview updates, devices in restricted network environments (air-gapped or heavily firewalled) may experience Windows Update failures producing error 0x80010002, blocking downloads of subsequent monthly updates via Settings. The issue stems from changed download timeout behavior and is not related to device integrity or installation ability; Microsoft advises applying and configuring Known Issue Rollback (KIR) group policies and restarting devices as a mitigation while a fix is developed.
