Russian ransomware gangs account for 69% of all ransom proceeds

TRM Labs reports that Russian-speaking actors dominated crypto-enabled cybercrime in 2023, accounting for over two-thirds of ransomware proceeds (surpassing $500M), controlling major darknet market transactions, and facilitating large-scale money laundering via exchanges like Garantex; concurrently, North Korean groups led cryptocurrency thefts exceeding $1B and new ransomware gangs (e.g., RansomHub) emerged as others were disrupted.
