New GPUThor attack defeats NVIDIA ECC protection for root access

GPUThor is a newly disclosed Rowhammer-style GPU attack that bypasses NVIDIA GDDR6 ECC protections to induce large numbers of bit flips, enabling denial-of-service and host root privilege escalation; researchers demonstrated PoCs on Ampere-class workstation GPUs, reported results to NVIDIA, and the vendor published guidance recommending SYS-ECC, IOMMU/DMA isolation, GPU error monitoring, and restricting untrusted CUDA workloads.
