Microsoft confirmed that recent WinRE updates meant to remediate CVE-2024-20666 (a BitLocker encryption bypass) can fail to install with a generic 0x80070643 error on systems where the Windows Recovery Environment partition is too small; affected updates include KB5034441, KB5034440, and KB5034439. Microsoft will not provide an automated resolution, and users must either manually expand the WinRE partition by ~250 MB or follow provided manual/PowerShell procedures to apply the fixes.
