Data breaches at Viamedis and Almerys impact 33 million in France

Data breaches at French healthcare payment processors Viamedis and Almerys were confirmed by CNIL and are reported to have compromised sensitive personal data (names, dates of birth, insurer details, social security numbers, marital/civil status) affecting more than 33 million people in France. While contact and banking details were reportedly not exposed, CNIL warns of increased risk of phishing, social engineering, identity theft and insurance fraud, has opened an investigation, and requires the firms to notify affected individuals under GDPR.
