Microsoft’s February updates for Windows 10/11 quietly introduced the User Choice Protection Driver (UCPD.sys), which locks registry keys for HTTP/HTTPS and .pdf associations to prevent apps or manual edits from changing default browsers, breaking tools like SetUserFTA. While admins can disable it via a registry change, a scheduled task may re-enable the service, and despite speculation about DMA compliance, tests show some system links still open in Edge even when another default browser is configured.
