Ascension hacked after employee downloaded malicious file

Ascension, one of the largest U.S. healthcare systems, suffered a May 2024 ransomware attack—likely from an employee downloading a malicious file—that disrupted MyChart, phone systems, and test/procedure/medication ordering; reporting links the incident to the Black Basta gang and investigators found evidence of file theft from seven servers with possible PHI/PII exposure while no confirmed EHR data theft has been reported.
