An investigative report says German and other law-enforcement agencies ran large numbers of Tor relays and used timing-analysis attacks between 2019–2021 to deanonymize operators of the child-abuse platform "Boystown," with at least one victim running an outdated Ricochet client vulnerable to guard-discovery. The Tor Project disputes access to court documents but states the network and client-side mitigations implemented since then (relay removal, decentralization efforts, and Ricochet-Refresh with Vanguard protections) have made similar attacks harder today.
