Cloudflare says 1.1.1.1 outage not caused by attack or BGP hijack

Cloudflare reports that the July 14 global outage of its 1.1.1.1 public DNS resolver was caused by an internal misconfiguration that withdrew resolver prefixes from production and routed them to an offline location, not a cyberattack or BGP hijack. The issue began at 21:48 UTC, was detected by 22:01, reverted by 22:20, and fully restored by 22:54, affecting 1.1.1.1/1.0.0.1 and IPv6 equivalents; UDP/TCP/DoT traffic dropped while DoH was largely unaffected. Cloudflare plans to deprecate legacy systems, adopt progressive rollout with abstract service topologies, and improve internal documentation and peer review to prevent recurrence.
