The University of Hawaiʻi Cancer Center disclosed a ransomware attack on August 31, 2025 that encrypted systems for a single research project and led to the theft of research files — including historical documents from the 1990s containing Social Security numbers; the university engaged experts, obtained a decryption tool after paying a ransom, pursued deletion of stolen data, and implemented security hardening while preparing notifications to affected individuals.
