Personal and banking details among customer data stolen in Origin Energy hack

Origin Energy has disclosed a cyber incident in which customer personal information (names, addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers, Origin account details and partial payment data such as last four digits of cards or last three digits of bank accounts) was accessed. The company has not yet confirmed how many customers were affected (it has 4.8M accounts overall) while a person claiming responsibility has alleged ~2 million records; authorities including the ACSC, AFP and the privacy regulator are investigating and experts warn the data could be used for identity theft, targeted phishing or to facilitate physical crimes.
