Microsoft Warns New 'GigaWiper' Malware Combines Espionage and Destructive Capabilities

Microsoft identified GigaWiper, a sophisticated Golang backdoor that unifies multiple destructive capabilities—standalone raw-disk wipers, a Crucio-derived file-encrypting routine that prevents recovery, and a FlockWiper-like multi-pass eraser—into a modular platform that enables remote control, deployment of additional tooling, and on-demand destruction; researchers observed standalone wipers and larger backdoor binaries and recommended mitigations such as tenant-wide tamper protection, cloud-delivered antivirus protection, and EDR in block mode.
