ICO Warns of Student-Led Data Breaches in UK Schools

An ICO report analyzing 215 insider personal data breaches in UK education (Jan 2022–Aug 2024) found that students were responsible for the majority (57%) of incidents—frequently abusing stolen or weak credentials—and highlighted additional causes such as staff error and poor data practices; several incidents exposed or altered thousands of records, prompting calls to better guide and redirect young people’s cyber curiosity into legitimate career paths.
