UK Fraud Cases Hit Record High in 2026

Cifas reports a record first half of 2026 for UK fraud, with over 220,000 cases filed and identity fraud rising 9% YoY to nearly 130,000 cases driven largely by bank account and card targeting; account takeover (≈40,000 cases), a 402% rise in unauthorized SIM-swap incidents, and a 69% increase in money muling (≈13,000 cases) are key drivers, while concerns grow around synthetic identities, AI-enabled impersonation and digitally manipulated documents and younger people are increasingly both victims and participants.
