Calls for Global Digital Estate Standard as Posthumous Deepfake Fraud Risk Grows

The OpenID Foundation warns that inconsistent handling of digital estates—email, social media, devices, cryptocurrency and other accounts—creates risks of fraud, exploitation and impersonation, especially with emerging deepfake threats; it urges policymakers, platforms and standards bodies to adopt interoperable frameworks, verifiable death/incapacity processes, clear consent/revocation, and legal recognition of digital assets to protect identity autonomy after death.
