FBI Warns GenAI is Boosting Financial Fraud

The FBI’s IC3 warns that criminals are increasingly using generative AI to scale and legitimize fraud through realistic social engineering, AI-generated images, and voice/video deepfakes to impersonate loved ones or authority figures and bypass verification for financial gain. The advisory outlines practical defenses—such as using family safewords, scrutinizing media for artifacts, limiting exposure of personal audio/imagery, and independently verifying callers or organizations—to reduce the risk of AI-enabled scams.
