Know Ourselves Before Knowing Our Enemies: Threat Intelligence at the Expense of Asset Management

This article argues that comprehensive asset management—inventorying, monitoring, and administering hosts—is the essential foundation for effective cyber defense and for making threat intelligence actionable. Drawing on experiences with malware like Emotet and Qakbot and citing tactics such as SEO poisoning leading to Bumblebee infections and ransomware deployment, it contends that many compromises are preventable through disciplined patching, endpoint protection, and visibility. The core message: without strong asset management, even high-quality threat intelligence cannot meaningfully reduce risk.
