A Channel 4 “DataBaby” experiment demonstrated that factory-reset second-hand phones can still expose extensive personal data unless storage is encrypted; investigators recovered browsing history, cookies, contacts, SMS, photos, and documents, cautioned about potential account impersonation via recovered cookies, and advised enabling device encryption (default on iOS; optional on Android, Windows Phone, and BlackBerry) and performing encryption after reset—ideally twice—to prevent data recovery when reselling phones and other media.
