This report describes Windows’ Mark of the Web (MoTW) metadata (Zone.Identifier ADS) used to flag files from untrusted sources, outlines ZoneId meanings, shows how browsers and Outlook apply origin data (with incognito exceptions), and explains how MoTW can propagate across NTFS copies and through archive extraction tools (e.g., 7‑Zip, WinRAR); it also cautions that threat actors seek methods to bypass this protection.
