Gap BTW Google Play & AV Vendors On Adware Classification

Zscaler analyzed the top Google Play apps and identified roughly 1,845 applications flagged by AV vendors as adware, detailing static and dynamic findings from a sample app that requests excessive permissions, exfiltrates device identifiers and PII (UDID/IMEI, location, contacts, SMS), and communicates with multiple ad/telemetry endpoints and ad SDKs; the report highlights the privacy and UX impact, provides IoCs (URLs, ad SDK names), and discusses the tension between Google’s Play policies and AV vendor detections.
